Cookies and Flowers and Starbucks Alert!

Lest you think that me and mine are the only crew out there pursuing the addition of an older child from a far away place, I'd like to introduce you to three of our friends and their families.  Each one is in the same process. Each one has a unique story that will inspire you should you take a moment to read about them.  Millions are spent on fiction that tell stories far inferior!  Check them out and see - dare you!  While you are at it, they have the same challenges that we do as far as incredibly expensive requirements to legally remove their children from government care to loving homes.  Who doesn't like flowers, cookies, and starbucks?  Maybe you can be a part of their stories, while savoring one of these treats yourself!  (Below these are a few other notes, so keep reading....)

The Callen Family is heading to Latvia for their FINAL trip in adopting Lilija!  Flowers anyone?

The Butler Family is heading to Latvia for their 2nd trip in adopting Grace!  Cookies by the famous Julia H. OR several other goodies to win???

The Freeman Family is heading to Latvia for their 1st trip (finally!) to adopt Rita and Lera!  Starbucks card up for grabs :)

You know, it is easy to focus on our own adoption expenses, but I think that misses out on so much for all involved.  When we put others' needs first, when we look to help others, somehow the beauty and love and joy of adoption gets multiplied exponentially.  Can't really explain it.  I am just as excited when one of our friends' needs is met as one of our own!  Seriously.  Two of these families I've only met in cyberspace, but our hearts are tied together in ways that only God can orchestrate.

For those who have hung in with me thus far, I have to add one more itty bitty note.  Fundraising can be wonderful and fun.  But it is work!  We have been given so much through folks organizing and participating in those held for Vitaly.  However, please consider whether you might just plain old give.  Nothing in return.  No expectations from the family.  I can verify that they are exhausted from the emotions and paperwork and meeting more requirements than you can imagine.  To have someone just offer to help without anything in return?  Wow!  It happens!  Every donation and purchase and raffle ticket is appreciated, don't get me wrong!  But, those which are anonymous or come from those unknown to the family or who just want to be a part of the miracle?  Those are like receiving a gift within a gift.

Thought I was done, but not quite...
you see there are also families who would host (maybe eventually adopt) these kids but they need some help too.  To add to their funding to come for the summer, just click on the link, give with a note that includes the child's letter/number/name info, and be a part of the next families' stories!

If you look back a few days, you will see that Marian, Borys, and Roman are all coming for the summer!  Three families found, how about 5 more for these kiddos?  Pray, give, host?
The following kids (and others) have just a few days to be chosen for summer:

L45 $900 Scholarship Juri

 L64 $800 Scholarship Alina

L10 Demantis and Dariuss are twins with no scholarship money yet :(

L66 Anastasija, Aleksandra Twins "Nastya" and "Sasha"  have no scholarship help yet :(
U92 $500 Scholarship Viktor

I don't ask others to do what I won't.  So, as soon as I post this, we will contribute to one of the above.  Who will join in the miracles?

Watch and see friends :)

Have I Got a Deal for YOU! Trade your "junk" for treasure!

Our upcoming neighborhood yard sale is on the way!  The date is 5/19, which is right around the corner.  If you live nearby and want to

  • declutter your living space
  • contribute to recycling
  • donate to our adoption without spending any money

contact us to pick up your gently used items or to coordinate a drop off here before 5/17.

Fitting fundraiser for adoption I think.  These children are truly treasures that many are missing out on because of their circumstances and backgrounds.  Their lives have so much potential - just need someone to come along and discover them.  Ever heard of the pearl of great price in the Bible?  The one where the man goes and sells all he has for the treasure he discovers?

AND, Marian from my last post has been hosted for summer!!!  He will go to the same area as his best friend!!!  How awesome is that??!!??

AND, Roman is on hold for a family who is in the process of caring for hosting details.  Awesome again!!!

NOW, for the other 6 hosts needed for:

Nastya and Sasha
Alina

Juris
Damantis and Dariuss

Viktor
Borys

X marks the spot friends!

Ripples

First of all, our latest:
*Immigration paperwork is in!  Just waiting for the approval, then travel dates for trip 2 to finalize Vitaly's adoption!  We were thinking that this would come AFTER school is out, but things keep moving quickly so.... may need to be creative again :)

*As I type, V is outside playing street hockey with one brother and a friend.  He just returned from a bike ride after a school day with Dad.  Adjusting really well so far. Social worker visit next week to do our report; doctor visits galore to get as much info as possible.  Meeting to get ideas on the best school placement for him for fall.  Whew!!!

*Now, for the heart of the post. If you skip the writing, don't skip the end of the post please.  The best is saved for last! I have to take every opportunity to share with anyone who might listen or share about some other very special children - orphans from Latvia or Ukraine who are waiting for families.  The way we met V was through "hosting."  A 4 or 5 week commitment only.  Many families pursue adoption afterward, but not all.  That is fine.  Sometimes kids meet their adoptive families while here with another host family.  Some just have a summer of wonderful memories and pictures to keep forever - hopefully giving them some strength to carry with them on their journeys.  Some folks host knowing that they'd like to adopt.  I have chosen a few kids to spotlight here.  I'm praying that all will find a family before the window for summer closes in the next couple of weeks.  If you or someone you share with want more info, please contact me at pittcrew1@comcast.net.  These children are hosted through www.newhorizonsforchildren.org but there are other organizations too.  For those of you who are not committed to following Jesus, try www.projectonefortythree.com as they don't have a faith part to their application.

Once you see these faces, I hope that every person will do at least one of the following:
1. pray for a family to host/adopt - choose one child and pray
2. donate toward a scholarship or sponsor one of the kids through New Horizons - any amount helps
3. share this message so that others will see and spread the word
4. host! - single women are accepted for Latvia I know, not sure about Ukraine but I can find out
5. contact me or New Horizons for more info

Here they are!!!!  I PROMISE to any who choose these kiddos, contact me and we'll help you to raise the fees for plane fare, etc.  Please don't let money stop you!  You need an empty bed (borrow if you need to), love, and a little courage :)

JURI
from V's orphanage - tiny sweetheart
.Wonderful, funny and energetic child. Jurijs really loves to be around people and loves to make people laugh. He has tons of energy. One thing about Jurijs is that he really needs to be around others and doesn't like to play or do things by himself. He can get totally engrossed in playing legos, but still wants someone sitting right with him as he's working on them. He likes the reassurance that he's doing a good job. He's a smart kid and enjoys reading books with others. He does have some impulsive behaviors and always works through the tantrums on his own and then is able to join back in the group. He's a very fun and loving child who needs love and support. 9 years old.

Alina
$750 already paid!
$750 Scholarship Alina is a sweet girl with a warm personality. She has never celebrated her birthday. Her wish would be to have people around her who love her, lots of flowers, dancing, singing, lots of colors, and a chocolate fountain because she loves sweets, She is an explorer, she would like to fly in a plane and visit America. Alina's favorite animal is a crocodile and she wants to visit aquarium. She likes younger children and in the future would like to become a pre-school teacher.

Demantis and Dariuss
TWINS!
Demantis and Dariuss are twins who are both good at music and sports and have a good sense of humor. They both would enjoy soccer, swimming and volleyball in the Summer. Demantis is good at drawing and art and would like to learn how to play the guitar. His brother says that he is a good brother, and while they do sometimes argue as brothers do, they make up very fast. Darius is the more serious of the two and more focused on academics. He also would like to play the guitar. Demantis wishes to travel around the world, have lots of friends, and own a car. Darius wishes to speak ALL languages, have a family, and lots of friends. They were hosted 3 years ago and would like to come to a home with children of similar age. We think they will do in any small family.

MARIAN
He has $500 paid and his best friend has already been chosen!
$500 Scholarship Marian: an exceptional child! There are no other words to use to explain him! Violin is the instrument he desires to learn, planting his own garden is another wish, and most of all is to have a family and happy life. What more could he ask for? He has won awards for artwork and currently has items on display in a prestigious museum in Ukraine. Beethoven and other classical musicians are what he chooses to download to his MP3 though, he's not so much into sports. Marian said he wishes to have more friends. He said if he could get his best friend anything for his birthday as a present, he would give him a soccer ball because he loves soccer and works hard at doing good. He is hoping that he and best friend, Igor both get the chance to come to the USA this summer.

Nastya and Sasha
TWINS!
Anastasija, Aleksandra - "Nastya" and "Sasha" are very close sisters.  (Can't get the rest of their description to post, but let me know if interested and I'll manage to get it to you.)

VIKTOR
$500 paid already!
$500 Scholarship Viktor  is a most patient kid, who is also an artist with embroidery!  Consider that he did this in TWO days! He does NOT like singing, dancing or many sports. But, he will play soccer with friends every once in a while and loves to ride bikes. He wants to learn to play the violin if he could learn ONE new thing. He likes to read Greek legend books and novels.

BORYS
$1,000 paid already!!

$1000 Scholarship Borys has a best friend who describes him as a great soccer player, a so-so artist who loves to draw, a funny, kind, and loyal friend. He helps take care of the orphanage dogs and is well liked by the other kids. Borys is of gypsy descent and has no known parents, siblings or relatives. He is in 7th grade and has been in the orphanage as long as he can remember. He admits he has always dreamt of having a good family of his own. He was hosted in summer 2011 and absolutely loved the experience, taking many happy memories "home" to Ukraine. A family who recently spent time with Borys, while in Ukraine to adopt his best friend, has advocated for Borys to have another opportunity to be hosted this summer.

ROMAN

Roman is small for his age and a little bit shy. He has hazel eyes and freckles and when his face lights up in a smile, it's the most adorable thing ever. He loves to play soccer and anything outdoors. At school he sings in the chior and dances. If he had 1000 grivna ($125) , he'd buy a guitar and teach himself to play. He has never traveled anywhere outside Ukraine. He's been passed over TWICE for hosting, and stayed behind, watching other friends leave for America. An adoptive family who recently spent time with Roman, advocated for him to have one more opportunity to be chosen. They also commented on his small size - much like an 11 or 12 year old. LAST CHANCE

Who wants to have the best, most challenging, most rewarding summer of your life?  Or - help someone else to do so?

10 CHILDREN, 8 HOMES NEEDED - Surely we can help 10 kids my friends....

With a hopeful heart, Sue

The Next Generation

Brotherly love (not the Philly kind BH, sorry)

Today's thoughts are swirling around our next generation.  The above picture is just one reason that I have so much hope for those coming in behind us 40-somethings.  I want to explain why, but also propose a project that goes along with all I've been seeing and wondering.

So, first the photo!  This was taken after our son, Nathan's, lacrosse game.  They played the toughest team in the county and did a really good job.  Really good against them?  12-3 loss  Seriously!  Anyway, V immediately runs down to the field after.  He shares with Nate, "No cranky Nafe.  It's okay. It's only game. You okay?"  Nate turns his attention to his new bro and agrees that indeed it is okay.  They start to walk off - N's arm on V's shoulders.  They run into one of Nate's friends, who chats with V too.  V loves to be included  in Nate's social circle of guys - and the guys really seem to enjoy him.  This photo and everything in it speak of hope to me.  Maybe the next generation of adopted children will have their own intact though imperfect families.  Maybe the next generation of kids who have become brothers or sisters to adopted kids will see the need and adopt into their own families.  Maybe the friends of these young men and women will have the opportunity to experience the wonders of adoption and become open to it themselves.

On to the potential project....  Our second trip to Latvia is coming up soon - likely summer.  V and I are scheduled to return together to care for court and paperwork issues.  Bryan isn't required to go, and really doesn't have time off then as I can.  Here comes the project possibility!

What if... we multiply the impact of the above moment?  What if a new family member is joined by a brother in a place where he can bond even more?  A place that has been his home for 14 years, but where he hasn't had a family in almost a decade.

What if a brother sees and understands more of who his new sibling is and who and what he has left behind?  Will their worlds come together and spark something new that might change the lives of more than just those two?

What if the brother invites a few friends to join us?  What if we offer a few days of help to woman there who reaches out to kids their age who are pretty much alone?  Would all of their lives change?  They are just heading into adulthood and occupations.  The potential....

Bottom line:  right now this is an idea that I'm praying about.  There is interest from Nate and some of his friends.  We'd extend trip two to last about a week to get in as much experience as possible.  The friends would be responsible for their plane fare, but bringing Nate wasn't in our budget.  His job doesn't cover enough for the ticket either.  So, if you see the potential and want to support the project, please donate using the Paypal button to the right or email at pittcrew1@comcast.net for other options.  Probably need  $2,000 to cover him.  I'll let you know how things develop!

So Many "Firsts"

Nate is our oldest - super big bro to the other 3!

Nathan is graduating in June.  A huge milestone!  We were searching through our photo albums this week for a collection of pictures to represent his 18 years of life.  Wow - what an experience for a parent....  Think Nate was pretty amazed too.  As we looked, V was drawn in and settled down beside us to look through everything.  I think that he enjoyed seeing his brothers as babies and little guys for the most part.  Not sure what all he was thinking.  But I was a bit of an emotional fruit salad - little of this and little of that all tossed together.  Couldn't help but wonder about all of the years we had so little of for him.  Also, all of the "firsts" recorded for our other three reminded me of what we hadn't done/seen/experienced with V.

As I've thought about it since, I'm realizing that we are still doing/seeing/experiencing many of the same things with him.  They just might be at a later age than the others.  For example, tonight was a Good Friday event with our friends at Cedar Ridge.  Loved how V was exposed for the first time to what happened so many years ago that affects us all today.  He has not heard this a gazillion times as his brothers have.  The words of the Bible and the name Jesus are as new to him as to our others when they were little.

Loved how creative my friends were - using candles, interactive painting, music, real wood and hammers, fire.  V could see and hear and feel pieces of Good Friday.  A full understanding?  Probably not.  But my other guys didn't get a full understanding at first either.  Actually, not sure I totally get most of it yet.

We will color eggs together and hunt for them.  We'll have our first Easter celebration and dinner together.  He is attending his first wedding ceremony this weekend too!

V teaches me so many things.  This is just another.  What began as my feeling sad about what we and he had missed was just spun around to be seen from a new perspective.  We have so many "firsts" to experience together!  They don't have to occur at a certain age.  Sounds simple, but sometimes it takes me awhile to understand new ways of thinking.

So looking forward to celebrating this first Easter with 6 of us.  After all, it is because of what Jesus did on Good Friday and Easter that Bryan and I even have V as a part of our family.  Sacrifice, love, new life, pain, joy, separation, union - all a part of the journey.

Celebrating,
Sue
